This awesome offering from l’Encantada is a wealth of complexity with layers of fruit, spice, exotic wood, and more. To proclaim this as the ultimate expression of Armagnac might be an overstatement, but there is enough here for it to ring true. Rich winter spices (with allspice dominant in this mixture), red fruit, leather, toffee, and dried orange rind fill out the aromas where the high proof does not overly impose itself. With a touch of heat on the palate initially, the Armagnac becomes a velvet rug upon which crushed fresh nuts, dried apricots, ripe red currants, candied ginger are spread. It then coats your tongue with freshly sawn cedar, freshly tanned hide, dried orange zest, caramel, nuttiness redolent of walnut, pecan, and brazil nut. As the flavors come to the finish, it seems they wander off for a moment and then swing back with a lush red fruit component mingling with the toffee and nuts, lingering to a final smooth and satisfying finale. Rusticity and complexity meet elegance, an iron fist in a velvet glove, indeed.
